Tonight at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, two reeling teams will find themselves on the ice desperately needing a victory. Much has been made of the coincidences between last season and this, with your Minnesota Wild on the ropes, the coach on the hot seat, and a losing streak in tow. Can the Buffalo Sabres be the team that turns things back in the right direction a second straight year? And that may not be the biggest news of the day....
With the Wild swirling around the bottom of the toilet bowl, GMCF was able to make a move without mortgaging key pieces of the current or future roster. Devan Dubnyk, the 6'5" 210 pound netminder cost the Wild a 3rd round draft pick and has an $800k cap hit, which leaves the team with plenty of resources to make further moves. He will also cost the Wild a roster spot, as GMCF has also said that he will carry 3 goalies when all are healthy. The Wild has generally carried an open spot on the roster throughout the year, which has allowed them to make quick callups from Iowa when players have come down with the flu in warmups or otherwise not been able to go with very little notice. We'll see if that also has an impact. Dubnyk brings along some solid stats, and has classically played for very poor teams, so it will be interesting to see how his game translates to the shot-suppression style the Wild can play. At first glance this appears to be a good trade, but we will only see as the rest of the season plays out.
Unfortunately however, the Wild will be forced to do battle against Buffalo and Arizona without Ryan Suter as the league handed him an expected 2-game suspension. The Wild's decimated defense core will feature a #freed Jonathon Blum, the return of Matt Dumba, and Jared Spurgeon playing the left side for the first time in his career. Marco Scandella and Justin Falk were both placed on IR to make room for Dumba. That should at least be interesting. Maybe Suter will take this time to recuperate and think about all of the things he's done.
On to the Walk, with a song to welcome the newest member of the Wild:
